The competitive destination a sustainable tourism perspective

Like many published works, this book is the product of a true labour of love. It is an attempt by the authors to capture and convey the essence of what they believe is important to successful tourism.
As the title of the book indicates, the focus of our efforts is the tourism destination itself. While many other paradigms have been the basis of books on tourism, we believe that, from a management perspective, the destination is the fundamental unit on which all the many complex dimensions of tourism are based. Others have, quite appropriately, focused on various aspects of tourism, such as the tourism experience and human behaviour in tourism (Pizam and Mansfeld, 1996). Increasingly, many are examining tourism from an environmental or a sustainable tourism
perspective (Swarbrooke, 1999). A great number have chosen to take a more ‘micro’ perspective by focusing on the operation of the successful hospitality firm (Lefever, 1996). A great many have also focused on marketing in tourism (Morrison, 1989). While all of these different views of tourism are very valuable, we believe that a focus on the destination provides the integrated perspective that a destination must have if we are to comprehend, pull together and manage all the many elements that determine the success of a tourism destination.
