Rural tourism and recreation principles to practice

It is no accident that the publication of this book coincides with the second international conference hosted by the Leisure and Tourism Management Department at the Scottish Agricultural College (SAC), Auchincruive, in September 2001. The restructuring of agricultural industries, evident in attempts to broaden rural economic bases through diversification, requires support that has led to a broadening of scope within many of the institutions that assist Europe’s rural industries. This explains the positioning and purpose of the tourism department in SAC, and illustrates the particular focus of its development work. In September 1998, The Leisure and Tourism Management Department held its first international conference. Entitled Rural Tourism
Management: Sustainable Options, it was dedicated to assisting the formulation of a rural tourism research agenda and to highlighting areas of policy which such research might best inform. The resulting ‘Auchincruive Declaration’ (Hall, 1999, 2000) set out this agenda.
